2026 Local Government Elections

Key Dates

In October 2026, all 29 Tasmanian councils will hold ordinary elections for Councillors, Mayors and Deputy Mayors.

Voting is compulsory and conducted entirely by postal ballot.

    Nominations open

    Candidate nomination forms may be lodged with the TEC Returning Officer or council Electoral Officer from this date.

  2. Thu 10 Sep · 6:00pm

    Enrolment closes

    The State electoral roll closes. Electors must be correctly enrolled by this time to receive a ballot pack.

  3. Mon 21 Sep · 12:00 noon

    Nominations close

    Final deadline for candidate nominations. Forms must be received by the Returning Officer by this time — not merely postmarked.

  4. Tue 22 Sep · 12:00 noon

    Nominations announced

    The TEC publishes the confirmed list of candidates for every council, mayoral and deputy mayoral contest.

  5. From Mon 5 Oct

    Ballot packs delivered

    Postal ballot material is delivered by post from this date.

  6. Tue 27 Oct · 2:00pm

    Close of poll

    Completed ballots must be received by the TEC by this time to be included in the count.

  7. From Wed 28 Oct · 9:00am

    Counting commences

    Counting begins statewide. New councils are expected to be declared and sworn in through November 2026.
